MINUTES
The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. by Carolyn Fishel, (presiding for Shannon Snyder who was not in attendance). Board members in attendance were Bob Brachle, Mary Cooper and Fay Rice. There were 14 members and guests present. Guests included Lt. Bill Wall, Officer Sue Wonija and Derrick
Robbins.
A motion was made to approve the minutes of the November 2001 meeting. Second. Approved.
Carolyn Fishel gave the treasurer’s report. There was a total of $384.51, $16.00 was collected at the November meeting, ADT made a donation of $25.00. On January 5, 2002, dues were paid to the Coalition of city Neighborhood Associations in the amount of $20.00. There is presently $405.51 in the treasury. A motion was made to approve the treasurer’s report. Second. Approved.
Officer Wonija spoke to the group about the Sarasota Police Department’s Citizen Volunteer Program. The program puts more people on the street to be the eyes and ears of police for the sake of betterment of the community. They are seeking volunteers who can commit to as few as 4 hours a month. The 5-hour basic training consists of a tour of the communications center and the police department. There are presently 32 volunteers.
Lt. Wall updated members on neighborhood activities and advised members to call the police if they see anything suspicious and out of the ordinary.
Old Business: Carolyn stated that Shannon will complete the packet on grant money so we can get our grant for the newsletter. A discussion ensued.
Rhonda Moraca and Carolyn Fishel renewed interest in completing a newsletter and a sign-up sheet was circulated for those volunteering.
The phone committee will be renewed to inspire attendance at the meetings. A sign-up sheet was circulated for volunteers.
New Business: Carolyn asked for suggestions for a program for the February meeting. Suggestions included inviting people to speak on the strong mayor issue coming up for election on March 12, scheduling someone from the city to update the plan for neighborhood improvements, and inviting the new director of parks to speak on Arlington Park.
